I discovered this awesome artist called DJ Ericz through the cpop.bww2.com music sharing directory.  This Australian Chinese DJ does some amazing remixes of Asian music from Jay Chou to Utada Hikaru.  Check him out at www.djericz.com.  He just put up his remixes a couple days ago.  Here's some links to some of my favourite tracks:
Chinese Club Anthems(22 Minutes long)
Chinese R&B Vibes(18 Minutes long)
Utada Hikaru - Colours(4 Minutes long)

MuchMusic VJ Search

I think everybody I know has been watching the MuchMusic VJ search, at least people I know in MIT and in campus radio.  That show is irresistable to even the most skeptacle people that study media.  So what did you guys think about Tim winning?  His fan base was gigantic!  You could tell just by watching the last couple of episodes!  Here's my take on why Tim would have beat out the other competition.
Firstly, I think Tim is from Ontario and that just gives him a huge advantage.  The population is simply bigger in Ontario and he's representing the locals, so already he has the most access to a large portion of the population in Canada.  Secondly, he already built his fanbase from the wildcard vote.  The other competitors did not have as much time to build that fanbase.  Oh yeah, and Tim is HOT!  But so Nikki and Erik, and Sean also probably has a following of admirers too.  So Tim winning probably had more to do with the local accessability and previous fanbase building factors.
Something I realized - Western Canada cannot get past that Ontario voting block.  I know the VJ search doesn't have ridings like traditional Canadian politics, but I think the same principles apply!  There are more MuchMusic fans in Ontario.  Too bad for Nikki, Sean, and Erik.

The Baha'i Faith + Iran

I went to a Baha'i community gathering last night and from there I heard about some media articles regarding the situation in Iran.  The country is largely Muslim and as a result of their current government there have been some recent media attacks against Baha'is in Iran.  I know people in any community around the world are flawed; nobody's perfect.  That doesn't mean there is any need to hate any community of people in the world, regardless of their religious background.  Even the select few Muslims that are causing these problems for Baha'is in Iran do not deserve to be hated.  "Hating the haters" doesn't solve any problems.
The Baha'i community is very warm and welcoming.  They have organized their religion around the world to the best of their ability to reduce hatred, division, prejudice, and so on in their teachings.  The people I've met through this community have helped me avoid many problematic temptations of Western society.  There are five million Baha'is around the world but they are one of the fastest growing religions.  They believe in world peace and unifying all religions so that conflicts such as the one I've mentioned above will dissipate.  I hope people from Western societies from any religious background will become aware of the Baha'i faith, so that they have a greater capacity to help Baha'is.

Late Brokeback Review

I saw Brokeback Mountain today and it was pretty good.  I loved the scenery and the acting.  Some people said it was too long and it lost its pace but I really enjoyed the slow pace.  I thought it was perfect because it made the movie seem more real.  I think people are too used to the overly publicized, quick, action-packed movie.  I think most people who have a more sophisticated taste in movies will enjoy this one.  The movie is not for everyone.  It definitely demands a mature, rather than an immature audience.  I don't mean to insult everyone that doesn't like it; that's just my point of view.

Essays Left to Write: 2

Well now, I've written tons of essays this term.  Some of the topics were really interesting.  Here are the essays (+1 magazine article) I've finished lately:
  1. Critique on Theodor Adorno's "On Popular Music"
  2. Critique on Laura Mulvey's "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema"
  3. The Origin of Homo sapiens:  Multiregional vs. Out of Africa Models
  4. Magazine Article about Jehovah's Witness stereotypes
I still have two essays left.  The topics for those are:
  1. Commodification of People's Lives in Capitalist Society
  2. Political Economy of Chinese Popular Music
Wow, I can see why I haven't stressed that much this semester.  The essay topics I've picked are so engaging!  The only one I really struggled with was the Anthropology paper on the origin of Homo sapiens and maybe the two critique papers.  Probably because they required regurgitating theory and research!  Ick!  Still interesting topics though.
